Overview: Infinite Worlds of Science Fiction is an immersive exhibit at EMP that encourages visitors to embark on their own space adventure and discover how science fiction allows us to break away from the confines of the tangible world with unlimited imagination, boldness, and creativity. With more than 150 artifacts, viewers experience the incredible range of storytelling found in science fiction — from Star Trek and H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds, to Men in Black and Blade Runner. Project Goals: The exhibit space resembles the inside of a retro-futurist spacecraft, with warm, patinated brass and steely blue lighting (inspired by neofuturistic concept artist Syd Mead). I envisioned an illustration-driven marketing campaign that echoed these visuals without appearing overly retro, and expressed the major exhibit themes of creativity, exploration, and the otherworldliness and vastness that is inherent in science fiction. Execution: I commissioned Spain-based illustrator Señor Salme for the project, whose illustration style had the perfect blend of nostalgia and modernism. Salme and I worked together to ideate four unique scenes that revolved around the core exhibit themes. I then coordinated EMP's copywriter to pair each illustration with an accompanying phrase or question to further cement and complement each theme. Additional design elements were minimal to allow for the illustrations to carry the weight of the campaign.
